President of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves has opened the TAB Symposium

The international TAB Symposium “Hyperlocal City” has kicked off today at Kultuurikatel with an address by the president of Estonia. Ilves said: "Just as architects have to make sure they understand enough engineering to build a building that not only looks nice but also won’t fall down, in the future, if you are going to use the new technology, it is your moral obligation to understand IT well enough to avoid the potential threat.”

The symposium will began at 10 with remarks from president Ilves, a keen advocate of new technology. The presentations and discussions of the first day will focus on the third industrial revolution and data. The keynote speaker of the first session is Prof. Carlo Ratti. CEO of Ericsson Estonia, Seth Lackman and Japanese architect Edward Suzuki will also hold presentations and join the discussion. Lev Manovich will give the main presentation of the afternoon “Data” session together with Jarmo Eskelinen and Steven Poole.

“Mobility” will be the first topic of Friday with architect and product designer Steve Diskin, Ericsson Estonia head of sales Erki Kõiv and professor of University of California Dr. Aly Tawfik.
Salome Galjaard of the international engineering bureau Arup will start the “Fabrication” session in the afternoon to be joined by some of the authors of TAB main exhibition: Igor Siddiqui, Moritz Doerstelmann and Roland Snooks.
Each session will be followed by an hour of open discussion.

Entry to the symposium with TAB pass, day and two-day tickets are sold at the door for €15 and €25.
The first day of the symposium will be streamed online by Estonian Public Broadcasting.
