The use of wood in architecture is witnessing a new striking development phase in the construction field. CLT and Gluelam represent the new generation of materials that allows designers to introduce wood not only as a bearing structure but as a wonderful and sustainable materials that can be shaped in any form.

It is common for architects and designers to submit their projects to industries and makers but it is less common for them to work together. Industries organise production based on the designer’s demand, while designers design their structure based on the industrial offer.

In this closed loop, where the industry is waiting for the mass orders before using new materials and production processes and the designers are incapable to produce new forms due to the lack of new materials, the use of wood for building in nordic countries remains standardized and most of all, undeveloped.

If we considere wood being the primary renewable resource of nordic countries, why wood is not ruling material in architecture?

In this roundtable we have invited architects and industries to break this closed loop and create a starting point to share knowledge, ideas and procedures that will help creating a new industry able to answer to a demand of change and promote new architecture which is needed to push a new sustainable economy based on local resources.
