The entry Enhanced Urban Movement by Clement Lobbens and Frederique Barchelard (Denmark) has won the Vision Competition of Tallinn Architecture Biennale “Epicentre of Tallinn”. The model of the winning entry along with other works of the competition is exhibited at the Viru Keskus until 30th September.
The entry LIMBO by young Estonian architects Anni Müüripeal, Sander Paling and Märten Peterson was awarded the second place. Dot.Flow by Lithuanian architects Kasparas Žiliukas and Tomas Valentinaitis has won the third prize.
The jury gave special mention to five entries that fitted well into the topic:
RUKKILILL by Alissa North from the Canadian landscape architecture office North Design Office.
MAGNET by the Estonian architecture bureau QP.
AD2115 by Latvian architects Atis Sedlenieks and Darta Dambe.
HOTSPOT by Finnish architects Elina Lindholm, Tuuli Salovuori and Terhikki Vaarala.
TRIPTYCH by a Finnish French group.
The jury members were Winy Maas of the Dutch architecture bureau MVRDV, Tallinn City architect Endrik Mänd and Villem Tomiste, the founder and curator of the first TAB.
The jury pointed out that considering the upcoming changes the new space has to be flexible and leave more room – for example for the self driving cars, but also for other changes in the urban environment. The winning entry expresses this flexibility – Viru väljak is covered by a large network that operates according to the particular need at the time. Within the network there are architectural small forms – bicycle lockers, benches, street vendors and cafés.
Whereas the second, third and special mention entries mostly present interesting ideas what the society could look like when self driving cars will appear, the first prize is a good work on public space that fits especially well for the Viru Square. The systematic approach includes flexibility that can handle the new traffic situation as well as the complicated context of the Viru Square.
The people’s award according to the online vote went to the entry 27 by Ukrainian architects.
Arhitekt Must organized the Vision Competition and created the exhibition in Viru Keskus.
