TAB Symposium to explore space, technology and community

07.07.2015

This year's TAB Symposium will take place on the 10th and 11th September and will take an interdisciplinary route, looking at the way space, technology and community intertwine in the context of the third industrial revolution.

By bringing together opinion leaders from diverse fields to discuss the connections between spatial environment, economy, technology and the evolution of society, it will open a public debate about matters that will influence the daily lives of everyone living in the not-so-distant future: How will I move around? Where will energy come from? Where will we find resources to sustainably manage our communities, cities and states? The symposium will attempt to imagine the future of our spatial environment and the role of architecture and planning professionals in its creation.

The architectural keynote at the "Third Industrial Revolution" session will be delivered by Prof. Carlo Ratti - the founder of the international design office Carlo Ratti Associati and director of MIT SENSEable City Lab, a research group that explores how new technologies are changing the way we understand, design and ultimately live in cities. Ratti was named one of the "50 most influential designers in America" by Fast Company and highlighted in Wired Magazine's "Smart List: 50 people who will change the world.” Ratti will also exhibit a prototype at the TAB main exhibition

Lev Manovich will be one of the leading speakers at the “Data” session. Manovich is a Professor of Computer Science at The Graduate Center, CUNY, and founder and director of Software Studies Initiative that works on the analysis and visualization of big visual cultural data. In 2013 Manovich appeared on the List of 25 People Shaping the Future of Design.

Steve Diskin is the design visionary speaking at the “Mobility” session. Diskin has a B.A. (Visual Studies) and an M.Arch (Architecture) from Harvard University, as well as a PhD (Urbanism and Technology) from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. His professional career in architecture and industrial design began with the architecture firm of Kenzo Tange in Tokyo, the establishment of his studio in Los Angeles and the design of the HELIX clock now in the permanent collection of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum (US).

At the "Fabrication" session of the symposium, Salomé Galjaard will represent the international engineering firm Arup and their research into additive manufacturing. Galjaard is a senior product and interaction designer at Arup's Amsterdam office. Her latest work is a research project on the application of Additive Manufacturing in metal for the production of structural elements.

Stay tuned for more information on speakers and programme of the symposium.
