3DL - ARCHITECTURAL ALGORITHMS AND IDEAS IN SPACE

3D Lab (3DL) from the Faculty of Architecture at the Estonian Academy of Arts (EAA) presents an exhibit "3DL - Architectural Algorithms and Ideas in Space " coinciding with TAB, showing new directions and technologies related to architecture. On September 14th at 16:00 there will be a tour for TAB visitors.

TAB-Club

TAB-Club is the centre of the biennale, an information hub and a meeting place. It is a place where all paths meet, where all the roads go to, where the heart of the biennale beats.

Tallinn architecture studios open their doors to TAB guests and participants - TAB wants to offer visitors and local architecture friends an insight how the best local architects spend their working hours.

"New Talsinki" workshop presentation

The public presentation of the Estonian and Finnish architects' joint workshop „New Talsinki”, the aim of which is to prepare a realistic scenario for the rail tunnel between Tallinn and Helsinki and assess how the tunnel will impact the infrastructure of Tallinn or Viimsi, the location of the city centre and the whole urban living environment.

Wood in architecture: from design to production

The use of wood in architecture is witnessing a new striking development phase in the construction field. CLT and Gluelam represent the new generation of materials that allows designers to introduce wood not only as a bearing structure but as a wonderful and sustainable materials that can be shaped in any form.

Panel discussion: Public Space in the next Machine Age

It’s inevitable that technology and humans will increasingly share this world in the near future. How will this shared life of man and machine look like? How do we design (public) space for it? Students from TTK University of Applied Sciences will present an installation, which questions conquering nature's self-driven system under man's control and to its needs.It raises a question how far can we go and at what point it becomes tragicomedy?

Opening and award ceremony: Vision Competition "Tallinn Epicentre" exhibition

The winners of the Vision Competition will be announced at the award ceremony. Prizes will be awarded for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize along with five honorary mentions by the Jury. The ceremony at Viru Keskus will also include the opening of the respective exhibition which will remain open until September 30.

What if you looked at a house as a whole and not as a complicated aggregation of ventilating shafts, glazed tiles, grout and silicate. What would our houses look like if architects and designers, engineers and builders, academics and practitioners all worked together towards the same goal, in the same spacetime?

We built the KODA house thinking about these questions, about all these "what if’s".

Lecture "Concepts of resilience"

Pete North, landscape architect and co-founder of North Design Bureau will give a lecture on new design approaches and strategies employed to achieve resilient landscapes. By focusing on the creative and innovative use of new technologies, materials and processes the lecture will highlight the new trajectory for large scale landscape projects, in the form of urban parks and waterfronts, speculating that the quality and dynamic inter-dependency of their ecological systems is an essential component of their success.

Exhibition - New Architects: Ireland

New Architecture: Ireland is a traveling architecture exhibition that presents the work of six young Irish offices that have emerged during the recent economic crisis. Ireland’s financial woes during this period are well documented and this has had an enormous impact on the construction and design sector. This shift has forced architects/designers to refocus and in this way these bleak times have produced new offices and ways of thinking.

Architecture as a Dialogue. New Approaches towards Transformation of the Architectural Heritage between Riga and Tallinn

The seminar aims to discuss the architecture as a process and as an outcome of complex and multilayered economic, social, cultural and political dialogue due to the impact of different regulations and restrictions, as well as other important circumstances.

Re:centering Periphery (RCP) is a multi format documentary project conceived by the ogino:knauss collective investigating the urbanisation produced by the modernist ideology, with a focus on peripheries and their everyday life. During the Tallinn Biennal, Lorenzo Tripodi, founder member of the group and coordinator of the project will present the overall concept and the RCP travelogues book collection, and introduce the most recent episode of the film series, Dom Novogo Byta.

"Inspired by Shukhov" filmscreening and lecture by Project Baltia magazine

Project Baltia magazine will present a documentary shortfilm dedicated to a famous Russian architect and engineer V. Shukhov who introduced a structure as a basis of an architectural object. The topic is appropriate in the context of the rapid development of parametric architecture and digital design methods that we witness today. The movie will be introduced by a lecture from St. Petersburg-based engineer and architect Anton Smirnov who will actualize the topic in the current architectural context and explains all technical details to the audience.

UUS LINN - Screening & talks on participatory urban design

This event presents insights to new Finnish models of participatory methods in urban planning. The Finland-based collective of young architect´s offices Uusi Kaupunki has developed a workshop method for solving challenges in urban (re-) development. A series of workshops produced by the Uusi Kaupunki –collective has been successfully arranged in different cities and municipalities throughout Finland. During 2014 the Finnish national broadcasting company YLE has documented the collective´s workshops and produced a tv-series called Kaupunki uusiksi.

Inspiration Lunch TAB edition: Public art – why and to whom?

The seminar introduces the percent-for-art principle; how it has been undertaken and how it could be developed. Professionals from Estonia, Sweden and Finland will share their experiences and a wide range of cases and possibilities will be discussed.

Tallinn Technical University Landscape Architecture seminar is investigating the professional limits of architecture and landscape architecture in local and international contexts. What kind of topics are most relevant for the future (landscape)architects. What kind of cooperation is needed with other research fields and professionals?

Exhibition "9 Conditions of Riga: Regeneration and Transformation of the City – Urban Environment and Architecture” is a satellite event of the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2015 programme. The exhibition "9 Conditions of Riga" contributes to the overall theme of the biennale “Self Driven Cities” by questioning whether and how the very inhabitants or the 'self' of the city can actually maintain and influence or rather ‘drive’ the politics of the built environment and the city.

Landscape Architecture Studio: Revitalising Industrial Areas

Tallinn Technical University Landscape Architecture studio project is focused on the revitalisation of industrial areas. Our primary case study is the empty Sitsi textile factory in North-Tallinn. Before generating new ideas we must be aware of international examples of revitalisation. We discuss what kind of new functions these former factories could be given and what are the various revitalisation strategies? What kind of role landscape architecture can play in all this?
